Breathe - Dan Bern

Image
Dan Bern caught my attention when I used to go to the public library and take out CD´s  to discover new music and copy stuff I knew and liked but didn´t own.    I found a couple of Dan Bern albums and I realized that he was a great songwriter.    I recommend giving his stuff, especially the older material, a good listen.   He has some gems.   However,   my favorite song by far has to be Breathe.   It says a lot of deep stuff for a pop song and reminds me a lot of Taoist philosophy.      If you want more of Mr. Bern I would then recommend, New American Language, from the album of the same name.    The things he says about love in this ring so true for me that I can´t help but laugh.       Finally, one more to get you going, I will recommend God Said No.     This song really captures well the idealism we all harbor somewhere in the back of our mind thinking "If I were in charge things would be different.    I would make things right."    It exposed our human, easil

The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead (Bernie Sanders RIP Mix)

Image
So ever since the whole Bernie Sanders incident during the last Democratic primary I have been thinking about what happened and how well it fits with the song The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC.     So I decided to record a cover of the song and practice my feeble animation skills by making a little video to go along with it explaining what many say happened in the Clinton vs.  Sanders race.     If you aren´t familiar with the original song I recommend you check it out.   The video is pretty cool as well and explains the original intent of the song based on the fall of JFK.   So, a song about JFK by XTC and covered by SHT.    Go figure. DANIEL JOHNSTON RIP  I was sad to read that Daniel Johnston is no longer with us.    Here are two of my favorite songs by the late, great, crazy artist. Life In Vain is from Johnston´s studio album fun.     It makes me think about my life and what the hell I´m doing with it. Daniel sang his wonderful song Speeding Motorcycle with the band that covered it, Yo La Tengo, live on the radio.    This is my favorite version of the song because it is simple and also shows Daniel´s great what-the-hell, what-you-see-is-what-you-get attitude which so many people loved so much. A short film (not a documentray) about Daniel: The Devil And Daniel Johnston Documentary Here is a small sampling of Daniel´s art.    There are tons of  works to check out online as well as an excellent documentary about him, The Devil And Daniel Johnston.

Alan Popa Project - Music from The Box Show - 2019.06.15

INTRODUCTION: Thank you for your interest in my little musical project.    Below you will find information about the songs performed at the Music from The Box Show in Alboraya, Spain on June 15th, 2019.  You can also hear studio and live versions of these songs on my Bandcamp page here  and videos for some of these songs on my YouTube channel here . THE TAO SERIES 1-3 These songs were inspired by the Jane English/Gia-Fu Fang translation (one of my favorite translations) of the first chapter of the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu.   Below is the player for the original album which also contains acoustic, live recordings of Tao I, II and III from 2016. The Tao of SHT (EP) by SHT Musik One The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The nameless is the beginning of heaven and Earth. The named is the mother of the ten thousand things. Ever desireless, one can see the mystery. Ever desiring, one sees the manifestations. Th

We Get By - Mavis Staples

I am not really familiar with all of Mavis Staples´  work but I do know that she is a well-respected member of  music royalty.     She has just come out with a new album produced by Ben Harper who I am a big fan of.    Kinda reminds me of how Rick Ruben was able to help Johnny Cash be his best at that point in his life.  As the Bandcamp review states: " Ben Harper fills the writer/producer role by just letting Mavis be Mavis on  We Get By . Harper takes her down a vintage Staple Singers path with the funky “Brothers and Sisters,” and when she sings, “trouble in the land, we can’t trust that man” her intentions aren’t exactly elliptical. The classic vibe is carried forward with Holmstrom’s doomy Pops Staples-style guitar licks on “Heavy on My Mind.” "   (Read entire review  here ). You can hear and/or buy the full album on Bandcamp here .

Wild - Molly Burch

This little song, Wild,  by Molly Birch caught my attention and my appreciation of the song has only increased as time has passed.    It is off the album First Flower    that came out in October of 2018 and is available on Bandcamp. First Flower by Molly Burch Like Ms. Molly sings, "It´s in my nature to be guarded¨ and  I too "wish I was a wilder soul".

Cool - Ilgen-Nur

This young woman reminds me a bit of  Courtney Barnett  with her conversational style lyrics.  She says her new album No Emotions contains "sad songs about growing up".    Yeah, that sounds about right.    No Emotions by Ilgen-Nur
